Bill Taylor Memorial Race - 8th November

The Porsche Club GB's annual Bill Taylor Memorial Trophy race took place last weekend on the Silverstone National circuit.
The event is an hour long, two driver race with cars and drivers from across the spectrum of Porsche Motorsport disciplines and is held in memory of successful Porsche racer Bill Taylor who raced up until he lost his battle to cancer. His sons Gary & Simon competed in this years' event in Bill's famous Carrera RS, finishing 10th on the road and 4th on the Handicap result.
A slightly diminished field to previous years' entries didn't dampen the excitement on the track.
Rupert Lewin, who was competing the race solo with his mighty 996 GT2-R was always the strongest contender for the win, but fuel consumption would be a factor in completing the full 60 minutes. | Lewin had a great start ahead of the GT3's of Jason Young and Phil Hindley, who took 2nd from Young on the start. Hindley pushed hard, putting in some very quick lap times and managed to hold onto the tail of Lewin's turbo charged GT2 for the first part of the race, with Young chasing hard to make up for time lost at the start.
The GT3 of Maurizio Fabris got away well, but a spin a Copse on the 2nd lap allowed Henry Firman (GT3)through. Firman then went on to pass the 996 Turbo of Paul Hogan before being re-taken by Fabris as he pursued Young for 3rd. However Fabris' race was cut short when he lost a front wheel at Becketts on lap 13.
Further down the field the father & son driven 993's of Mike & Steve Burtt and Paul & Graham Howells enjoyed a full hour of close and exciting racing for 6th and 7th place, resulting in the Burtt's clinching 1st place in the Handicap results and the Howells' settling for 2nd. 3rd place went to Paul Hogan & Aaron Scott in a 996 Turbo.
After pit stops, Lewin was in a dominate position with a 40 second lead over Chris Heeley who had taken over the GT3 of Young, and the GT3 of Tom Shrimpton that had been driven by Hindley.
However the final part of the race saw Lewin having to back off to conserve fuel, loosing around 2 seconds a lap to Heeley. But just 2 laps from the end Heeley lost mid-range power and started to drop back, giving Shrimpton a last minute opportunity to seize 2nd place, with Heeley crossing the line in the pits he just managed to hold onto 3rd place from Chris Egginton, who was pushing hard in Firman's GT3.
